Born in Liberia in 1967 and raised in Auckland, Emma Bass trained as a nurse in New Zealand and worked in London. It was here where she discovered her passion for photography at the Camera Club in Leicester Square.
Returning to New Zealand, she completed her photographic training and became one of the country’s top editorial photographers.
In 2011, Emma retired from commercial work to focus on fine art photography. Her work has been showcased in both local and international galleries. A number of pieces have been featured at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition in London in 2016 and 2022 and are also held in private collections worldwide. Emma looks to bring joy to those in difficult circumstances with her art displayed in hospitals, retirement facilities, hospices, and funeral homes.
Emma’s work challenges traditional notions of beauty, highlighting the allure of imperfection through elements like wilting petals and encroaching insects. She draws inspiration from her nursing background, emphasizing the healing power of flowers.
Emma collaborates with companies that align with her values, featuring her work on Auckland billboards. She has also worked in partnership with winery Trinity Hill (Rosé), Italian designer Laboratorio Capri (apparel), and the Breast Cancer Foundation of New Zealand.
