This photograph captured in Muriwai Beach represents the coastal beauty of Aotearoa and the preservation of the land at Muriwai. The rock of the gannet colony is visible in the background, creating a connection with the area and the beach,

The panoramic scene reflects the meaning of Muriwai as “End of the Water”, shown by a small stream on the bottom flowing off to join the ocean, creating a connection between seascape and landscape. The thin water mixes with the sand, creating areas of high reflection, rough sand and a gradient in-between, highlighting the seamless transitions of nature. Imprints in the sand signify exploration by human shoes, as well as evidence of birds landing and the erosion of flowing water, which is all washed away near the waves to form smooth and silky sand, conveying the ephemeral nature of our imprints on the beach, an endless cycle of creation and erasure. Beams of light, flare and rays shine upon the beach from above, joining the fog and sea spray near the silhouettes of the cliffs. The atmospheric elements immerse the viewer, creating depth and separation between the layers of the scene.

The outcrop of the gannet colony is emphasised in the center as a silhouette, bringing into attention the importance of preservation of ecology, with jagged edges of the cliffs telling a story of erosion over centuries. The interplay of a deep blue sky and ocean mixes with the warmth of the sunlight, conveying tonal balance. This moment in time is peaceful and tranquil, yet almost all elements in the photo are ephemeral; the waves wash away imprints, the cliffs will eventually be eroded, the haze will fade away and the tide will go down.
