Michelle Wilkin is a New Zealand ‘abstract minimalism’ artist, based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland. Inspired by the calming influence of nature and the beauty found in imperfection, she embraces her intuition to guide her practice. Her original fine artworks are a welcome escape from today’s loud and busy world.
Offering a place of calm for the viewer to sink into their thoughts and find comfort in the quiet spaces. Michelle’s work aims to challenge the concept of what most people vision when thinking about abstract art. Her pieces are as much about the intention of small subtle hidden details, as they are the absence of them.
Using her signature neutral colour palette and a variety of techniques, she manipulates layers upon layers of harmonious tonal acrylic paint and mixed media on natural canvas to create her atmospheric pieces.
Her captivating aesthetic has quickly become a source of daily calm and inspiration for many who follow her updates on social media, with collectors of her original fine artwork pieces now spanning across all corners of the globe.

‘A BLESSING IN DISGUISE’ is a friendly reminder of how letting your guard down and living in the now can result in moments of unplanned wonder and awe.
SERIES: SERENDIPITOUS
YEAR: 2024
CANVAS: 600 x 600mm (+40mm for frame) / 24″ x 24″
ABOUT THE SERIES:
‘Serendipitous’ is a series of framed original fine artworks that tests the theory that a sequence of events may not be individually beneficial, but once combined, the collective whole produces an outcome that is more fortunate for all.
Created as an assemblage of independent vignettes across a large swath of raw canvas, where the periphery of each ‘moment’ was intentionally left to blur beyond its natural borders. Resulting in a new interconnected scene, greater than its individual parts. Michelle then established new compositions, cropping each piece to provide an imperfect window into the wider picture.
By using raw canvas the paint soaks in and desaturates as it dries, creating a soft nostalgic quality to her works. A homage to the beauty found in nature’s patina, reminiscent of leaf impressions after a storm, and pebble imprints by the tides. A celebration of happenstance, this series teases the viewer with notions of more, while simultaneously remaining true to the artist’s practice of less.
‘A SENSE OF DÉJÀ VU’ encapsulates that warm, familiar feeling of having sensed something before. A piece as much unpredictable as it is comforting.

‘RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME’ embraces the concept of fate. Testing the theory of serendipity, where the outcome could not be the same if it hadn’t been for all the others involved.
