Liminal Bands

This photograph captured in Muriwai Beach represents the coastal beauty of Aotearoa. The extensive fog early this year that covered most of Auckland City was also found at Muriwai Beach.
The scene consists of a foggy beach late afternoon, most visually striking is the tonal gradient from white to dark, transitioning from the ocean’s milky white reflection of a foggy sky to the darkness of the volcanic dark sand. Within the bands of the gradient, the contrast in texture and displacement from the smooth slate of the sea-sprayed sand juxtaposed with the rough, busy footsteps of the middle sand.
Amidst the transition is a liminal area; an intermediary space between light and dark where a woman stands in the middle, unmoving, as if uncertain. Far away in the distance, shrouded by the haze and ocean fog a man walks his dog, appearing as splotches as the fog scatters the light. Despite what appears to be an overcast sky, specular highlights in the waves tell a different story, hinting at direct sunlight just across the corner. Broken sea shells and pebbles litter the ground. The tranquility of the liminal space allows one to truly think and be in a state of mind to appreciate their surroundings.
