First and Last
$350.00
Acrylic paint dissolved in water is used on a thick textured paper.
The work displays a figure holding a blanket and a pillow in their arms, and the red primrose, which is arranged in the cast shadow that is created by the figure in the painting.
The work is based on the idea of a first love that people experiences. It was then developed to the idea that the ‘first’ in anything, is also the last of the first, which was the inspiration of the title of the work. It also contains the meaning of the wish of the first to remain as the last.
Then the idea of exploring the different meaning of the flowers seemed interesting. Then looked at the different kinds of primroses as the name came from the Latin word, ‘primus’, meaning ‘first’, which suited the intention of the work. Primrose symbolise youth, innocence that inspired the idea of a young love, which is mostly represented by a red primrose, causing the outcome to have the red primrose, which symbolises passion, young love and longing.
The meaning of ‘longing’, was eye-catching during the research process. It developed to the pose of the figure holding onto the blanket and the pillow to show the strong desire, which further emphasised through the vivid folds of the blanket.
Then most of the figure is covered with some parts still visible, to show that the emotion is hidden, while it is unable to be completely covered. It is also shown as the flowers are positioned in the shadow.
